Lautaro Martinez's contract extension: Is the Argentine at Inter for the long haul?
After leading Inter to the 2023/24 Serie A title, captain Lautaro Martinez was tied down to a new long-term deal at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, which, if seen out, would see the Argentine spend an entire decade with the Milanese giants.
That countryman and current vice-president Javier Zanetti helped negotiate the deal, and had an astonishing 20-year playing career with Nerazzurri, would have made selling the benefits of an extended stay in Milan much easier.
But in the cynical world of professional football, it would be a surprise to see the 26-year-old still pulling on an Inter shirt in 2029.
Since arriving from Racing Club in the summer of 2018, the striker already sits amongst the greatest goalscorers in Nerazzurri history and helped bring domestic success back to the club, but after clinching the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, Martinez brought further attention to his talents with the winning goal in the 2024 Copa America final.

Could Lautaro Martinez spend a decade with Inter?
The usual soundbites dominated the formal announcement of Martinez’ contract renewal, with the attacker noting his desire to bring “even more trophies to Inter,” and reiterating how happy his family are in Milan, while also suggesting he owed the Nerazzurri an extra couple of seasons for those early years when he was still maturing as a person and player.
Improving his Serie A goalscoring output year-on-year could be a sign of the foundations provided by a stable home life, but if he continues on his current trajectory, it will be difficult to keep him in Italy.
Having won the Capocannoniere crown last term, the next target could be smashing the single-season goal-scoring record, while continental success is all that remains to be achieved alongside his teammates.

While a move to Spain would avoid any language issues, Barcelona are running out of financial levers to facilitate a bid and, for the foreseeable future, Real Madrid are well stocked in attack.
Unless Paris Saint-Germain enters the race, Inter are dependent on a Premier League giant making an approach and ensuring a huge payday for them, although the contract extension puts them in a powerful position to demand a significant fee.
Does Taremi's arrival add pressure on Lautaro?
Ever since Romelu Lukaku departed for Chelsea in the summer of 2021, Martinez has shouldered the goalscoring burden. With Inter operating a subpar revolving door of backup options, including the Belgian international’s brief loan return, that only really ended with the signing of Marcus Thuram in 2023.
However, while 13 league goals were a decent return for a Serie A debutant playing a floating role around, if not behind Martinez, the Frenchman could not provide a focal point like recent arrival Mehdi Taremi. The Iranian is arguably a more clinical finisher than the Nerazzurri captain.

If the former FC Porto man begins his Italian journey with a flurry of goals or strikes up a fruitful partnership with Thuram, Martinez could have his star status threatened and suddenly feel that an extended stay in Milan doesn’t look as attractive as when he was putting pen to paper.
Then an exit becomes more appealing than fighting to recover his standing, a situation Inter could stomach now that they are financially protected by this big contract.
