Serie A 2024/25: Matchday 5 results and table
The Derby della Madonnina between Inter and AC Milan was the standout fixture of Matchday 5 of the 2024/25 Men's Serie A campaign and it did not disappoint on Sunday night. With the Rossoneri securing a surprise 2-1 victory over their bitter Milanese rivals with a late Matteo Gabbia header, and drawing level on points with the reigning champions.
With fellow Scudetto challengers Juventus and Napoli playing out a tepid goalless draw in Turin the previous day, Torino unexpectedly leapt to the top of the standings by defeating Hellas Verona 3-2 on Friday night. After Empoli had continued their own stunning start to season by sending Cagliari to the bottom of the table with a 2-0 victory.
Saturday also saw Venezia pick up their first win of the campaign, but a 2-0 win over Genoa could not lift them out of the relegation zone, as Parma took a week off throwing away leads, to recover a two-goal deficit against Lecce with two goals in injury-time.
European qualification hopefuls Fiorentina and Bologna both triumphed 2-1 over Lazio and Monza respectively, before AS Roma ended a difficult week by defeating high-flying Udinese 3-0. The Giallorossi were yet to taste victory and parted ways with club legend Daniele De Rossi, but goals from Artem Dovbyk, Paulo Dybala and Tommaso Baldanzi gave new coach Ivan Juric the perfect start in Rome.
The Matchday 5 action was then delayed 24 hours when torrential rain in Bergamo forced the postponement of Atalanta versus Como 1907, but it was an entertaining encounter when the game eventually took place. With the newly-promoted club recording a 3-2 victory over the 2024 Europa League winners.
