The Italy Women's National Team have been dealt an early setback at UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, with forward Chiara Beccari officially ruled out of the tournament due to injury just hours before the team’s opening match against Belgium.

The Juventus Women forward, one of the Azzurre's brightest young stars, sustained a muscle strain in her right thigh during training and will be unable to participate in the competition in Switzerland. The 20-year-old, who featured at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, will return to Italy on Friday.

Beccari replaced by Bergamaschi

Beccari has been replaced by club teammate Valentina Bergamaschi, who had already been with the squad in Sion as one of four additional players brought in for the final phase of preparation. Although only 23 players are permitted in the final tournament squad, head coach Andrea Soncin had taken 27 players to Switzerland in case of last-minute injuries - an option permitted by UEFA regulations up to a team’s first match.

Alongside Bergamaschi, midfielders Aurora Galli and Martina Rosucci, as well as goalkeeper Astrid Gilardi, had also travelled with the group as reserves during the preparation period.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) submitted the injury documentation to UEFA, who approved the squad change ahead of Italy’s Group B clash with Belgium, scheduled for 18:00 CEST at Stade de Tourbillon in Sion on Thursday, 3 July.

Beccari is expected to attend the match from the stands to cheer on her teammates before heading home with Galli, Gilardi and Rosucci.

Italy will hope to overcome the loss of their promising young forward as they begin their quest for a deep run at Women's EURO 2025.
