Italy face a tough task in their final UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 Group B fixture, taking on world champions Spain knowing that they need a result if they are to guarantee their progression to the quarter-finals. The Azzurre had been set to book their place in the last eight until the last minute of their Matchday 2 game against Portugal, when a late equaliser left them with work to do.

Italy know that a draw will be enough to qualify for the knockout rounds, and a win would see them do so as group winners ahead of Spain.

But a loss could complicate things; should Portugal beat Belgium and Spain defeat Italy, goal difference will decide who will advance between the Azzurre and Portugal. The Azzurre currently have a goal difference of +1, while Portugal’s is -5 after their heavy opening-matchday loss to Spain.

Spain, meanwhile, have looked lethal in front of goal so far in Switzerland, scoring 11 goals in their two games - and at least five goals in six of their last seven matches. So, Andrea Soncin will have cause for concern despite boasting an impressive record against La Roja during his time in charge of Italy, managin a 3-2 win over them in December 2023 and a 1-1 draw in October 2024.

Italy vs Spain: Predicted line-ups

Having named the same starting XI in each of the two Group B games so far, Andrea Soncin appears to be wedded to his 3-5-2 formation and the personnel within it, so it's hard to imagine too much changing for the game against the world champions. He is, though, known for tinkering with his Azzurre squad selections and line-ups.

It’s unlikely that too much will change for this third game, but there is a case to be made for Giada Greggi’s inclusion from the start after two impressive appearances from the bench against Belgium and Portugal.

For Spain, although their place in the quarter-finals is already assured, they will need to avoid defeat in order to progress as group winners, so there isn’t much expectation of heavy rotation and the world champions will likely field a strong line-up.

Italy predicted XI vs Spain (3-5-2): Giuliani; Lenzini, Salvai, Linari; Di Guglielmo, Severini, Giugliano, Caruso, Boattin; Cantore, Girelli.

Spain predicted XI vs Italy (4-3-3): Nanclares; Fernandez, Paredes, Mendez, Carmona; Bonmati, Guijarro, Putellas; Caldentey, Pina, Gonzalez.
